For those not already acquainted: Stephen Gammell, in addition to being a very prolific studio artist, is also a great teller, appreciator, and illustrator of stories. For one so connected to storytelling, to visualize a narrative, or even a direction or a feeling, is to marry imagery and mark-making to an idea in an expressive, often intuitive process. While completing this series, Gammell shared the story of a longtime editor-turned-friend conversing through this creative process years ago, ultimately advising the artist to “...just try to find the music.” The titling of the series pays tribute to both that friend and to the process. Gammell’s work, abstracted and recognizable for highly-energized marks and swathes of color, takes us straight to the essence of place, more universal than location and rich with memory and feeling.
