Michael Corinne
West
Michael Corrine West was born in Chicago and spent most of her formative years in Ohio. She enrolled in the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1925, then moved to New York in 1932. West was a member of Hans Hofmann’s first class at the Art Students League, and his lasting influence guided her transcendent approach to abstraction. In 1946, West became active in the burgeoning post-war art culture of New York City, helping to shape a new emphasis on painterly process as well as the assertion of the spiritual within the language of abstraction.
