Sotomayor
Maikel Sotomayor (b. 1989, Manzanillo, Cuba) studied art at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana. Of his painting, the artist writes, “I am interested in the landscape as an activator of the sense of discovery and reunion, as an unexplored site; the rethinking of a space that is activated when seen…” Unconcerned with straightforward representation, Sotomayor interprets and filters what he sees, synthesizing scenes based on combinations and distortions of his memories of the countryside. In so doing, he creates new metaphorical spaces, sometimes recognizable as landscape and sometimes fully abstract, for his viewer to enter.
