Ilya
Bolotowsky
Ilya Bolotowsky carried the influence of geometric abstractionists such as Piet Mondrian into the era of AbEx in the U.S. Contrasting with the “hot” abstraction of the Action Painters, Bolotowsky sought to convey order and calm in visual expression. As the Hard Edge painters whose work led into Minimalism, he emphasized boundaries in his works-both between sections of color, and of the entire canvas itself-which urged the understanding of the painting as an object rather than an illusion or depiction.
