Shanlin

Ye

Shanlin Ye grew up in China and received her BFA and MFA from Tsinghua University in Beijing. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and acquired by public and private collections all over the world. Ye is a returning exhibitor at Sager Braudis Gallery, and for the January Exhibits brings a new series in oil and acrylic, presenting close-cropped, colorfully exaggerated portraits that respond to the dishonesty imbedded in social media culture. Her subjects appear to be stripped (or freed) of filters and masks, revealing something genuine and expressive. In these anonymous yet deeply intimate portraits, Ye interrogates the ways we dress up and show off our idealized personas, to explore the tender sentiments beneath these facades. Variously bold, troubled, erotic, and yearning, these vibrant portriats offer a parallel way to understand the social media images that dominate online visual culture.
