Leah
de Matta
Leah de Matta is a native of Iowa City, where she received a BFA in metals at the University of Iowa. She also studied chemistry and sustainability, both of which influence her work. She currently resides in St. Louis, drawing inspiration from the urban landscape. This sculptural body of work struggles with the admiration of industrial systems as evidence of human innovation, and the awareness of their destructive role, tainting that appreciation with environmental guilt. The artist employs her own innovation in representing engineered structures, lending complexity through a carefully designed process of assemblage.
