Elena Peteva comes to Sager Braudis Gallery as the Exhibition Award winner of the 2018 national juried exhibit, Paper in Particular. Peteva’s work is widely exhibited and acclaimed, including at the European Museum of Modern Art (Barcelona, Spain), the Butler Institute of American Art (Ohio), and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (Indiana), among many others. Of her meticulously, yet tenderly rendered drawings, Peteva states, “The outer is emblematic of the inner, whether the outer representation reveals my subject’s inner state or my subject acts as a personification of an idea.” Stillness and introspection pervade this work, housing simultaneously a sense of memory, of a present moment, and of contemplation of the future, inviting the viewer to take in, interpret, and identify with her subjects.
