Briana Bedwell draws on her surroundings and experiences to create expressive compositions that meld portraiture and gestural abstraction. Dramatized and frenetic, her contour-driven images with splashes of saturated color lend themselves to the lineage of portraiture with aims of capturing the personality, and at times the psychology, of the subject while remaining grounded in realism and representation. Constantly seeking creative outlets, Bedwell throws herself fully into her paintings, which serve not only as outlets but also a way to cope, process her experiences, and connect with figures in her daily life. An instinct for line and color lead her to remarkably communicative work that engages the imagination with simultaneous confidence and vulnerability and shows that spontaneity can be an artist’s strongest asset.
