Roberto Matta was a Chilean painter and a seminal figure in 20th-century Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Born in Santiago, Chile, he studied architecture before traveling extensively through the Americas and Europe, encountering artists including René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, and André Breton, who encouraged his work. Matta’s paintings, often termed “inscapes,” explored the human psyche through complex, dynamic spaces, later incorporating social and political commentary. He worked in multiple media, including ceramics, photography, video, and printmaking, and his work is held internationally in major museums.
